Under the Harrow (Audible Audio Edition) Flynn Berry Emma Powell Orion Books
Secret after secret is revealed in a consistently eloquent voice, always perfectly in tune with the dismal scene Nora discovered when she opened the door to her sister Rachel's house and found both Rachel and her dog had been horrifically and violently murdered. Yes, the dog! I've closed books and read no farther before because the author killed off a dog but I couldn't turn away from Under the Harrow. The narrator's voice sounds both depressed and terrified, not alternately, but simultaneously. If the words were read aloud, the reader would use a monotone and none of the excitement and tension would be lost because those emotions exist in the content itself. The story's dramatic enough. It needs no embellishment. So many surprises spring out at Nora as she uncovers each twist in the events leading up to her sister's death. I read it in no time, loving all the complications and how they fit together in the end. Flynn Berry is a master and I enjoyed each morbidly beautiful phrase of this brilliant work.

Under the Harrow (Audible Audio Edition) Flynn Berry Emma Powell Orion Books Reviews
When the publisher's notes said "for fans of Gone Girl" I dreaded reading this book, but it was a pick for book club so I tried it anyway (I was not a fan of Gone Girl).
Instead I found this to be a good mystery, decent pacing although a bit slow in parts, but overall a pretty good read. Some aspects were a little unbelievable so maybe not a great choice if you want something like a real life crime novel.
The opening of this book grabs your attention. Nora is traveling to her sister’s house but immediately senses something is wrong when Rachel fails to meet her at the station. Rachel has been brutally murdered along with her dog at her home in a small village in England.
This first-person narrative follows Nora’s investigation and emotional journey from the discovery of the body to the unveiling of the murderer. Flynn Berry’s writing keeps the tension high while revealing layers of truth about the relationship between the sisters and Nora’s personal struggles. The suspects, including Nora herself, are convincingly presented. The police are both supportive and skeptical. The final solution to the mystery has been alluded to throughout the novel skillfully so that the final unveiling is not apparent until the very end although clues are woven into the story throughout.
I enjoyed Flynn’s writing style. She was able to convey Nora’s state of mind well, filtering the plot through Nora’s thoughts. Flynn is able to maintain the pressure of the investigation and Nora’s anxiety through the sentence structure, short scenes, and flashbacks. I appreciate how she conveyed Nora’s inner thoughts.
This is a very good first novel and I look forward to more from Flynn Berry.
This was really a classic gothic novel. There was the dark broody feeling throughout. That genre was one of the earliest adult genres I read as a pre-teen/teen, and this book took me back to those early days. The main character Nora takes the train from London to her sister's home in the country only to find her sister has been brutally murdered. Nora gets more and more obsessed with finding out who was behind the terrible crime and at the same time she becomes more and more paranoid, unable to go back to London. There are many times in the story where you go back and forth like a pendulum trying to decide who is guilty of the crime. The story reveals secrets from the past that seemingly have a connection to Nora and her sister's life in the present story.
Five stars for unputdownable action, three for skimping on the details! Clever plotting and a very tight storyline keeps UNDER THE HARROW fascinating from start to finish, and my only criticism is that I wanted to know more about Nora and Rachel. In a way, that's not really a criticism I liked these women and wanted to hear more details.
UNDER THE HARROW is one of those novels that you begin by taking on faith. You are plunged into the action, and the narrative seems, at least to me, a little herky-jerky at first. You're carried along, thinking, "Am I missing something?" or "Could this be a little clearer, please?" and then suddenly you get used to the style and you're jogging alongside the narrator. It's her story and she's going to tell it as she likes . . . and at some point you realize that this is perhaps the central motif of the entire novel. People have a right to grab hold of their own life and do what they like with it, as long as they can stand the consequences.
No spoilers, but the last 50 or so pages are fascinating, and I wish that the novel had been a bit more balanced rather than surprise-ending-ish. We could have come to several of the surprising turns of events about 50 pages earlier and really enjoyed the suspense they create. In fact, now that I think about it, this is more of the same complaint I have about skimping on the details. Somebody got a hold of an early draft of this novel, I suspect, and told the writer, "Cut it by half, Berry. We don't need to know what Nora is wearing or how she likes cornflakes. And that first chapter -- move it along!" So we have a breathless first chapter and a whole book nearly devoid of the interesting little details that make novels sing. Thank god licorice and chow fun were allowed to stay.
I can't wait for the next novel by Flynn Berry. With the success of UNDER THE HARROW, perhaps she'll be allowed to have her own way a bit more with the next one. That can only be a good thing!
The writing in this thriller is absolutely gorgeous and grabbed me from the first page. I read the book in two days, unable to put it down as I followed the narrator's obsessive need to find her sister's killer. This is in the best tradition of plot twists and who-dun-its and I hope we hear much more from this very gifted writer. There are a couple of unexplained parts to the murder which I won't get into for fear of spoiling the plot and eventual pinpointing of the killer, but I did find myself wondering if the author forgot to tie everything up. But, nevertheless, a fine read. Should be on the best seller lists!
